Wulled Mine… I mean Mulled Wine

Screen Shot 2016-02-19 at 18.18.13So I actually used to hate mulled wine, with a passion.. A BURNING RAGE I TELL YOU! But then I found a great recipe online, after a couple of attempts changing it up a little bit, After testing out the first few batches and wondering how much alcohol (too much the first time) to put in I believe I have perfected it.

I also have a non alcoholic version which is equally as delicious, but for this post I’ll be showing you the alcoholic version… VERY alcoholic, so be careful when drinking as it’s deliciously deceiving.

You will need:

  • 2 bottles of red wine (I use a Rioja)
  • 100g Caster Sugar
  • 1 Bottle of smooth orange juice
  • 1 bottle of Jack Daniels Honey Whiskey
  • 1 Vanilla Pod sliced lengthways
  • 2 Star Anise
  • 4 Cloves
  • 2 Clementines
  • 2 Lemons
  • 2 Limes

Now this recipe is SO easy, its essentially throwing everything in a pot and leaving it to simmer and make your house smell like Christmas.

First up we’re going to slice the clementines, lemons and limes, once you’ve done that set them aside.

Pour half of one bottle of wine into a big pot with the sugar. On a medium heat start to reduce it down until it reaches a thick syrupy texture. Add the fruit and squeeze the juice out with a mixing spoon so incorporate the flavour into the wine.

Add the vanilla pod and seeds, star anise, cloves and gently stir for 5 minutes. 

Add the remaining 1 and 1/2 bottles of wine, the orange juice. Leave to simmer for at least 30 minutes on a low heat. 

Pour the wine out of the pot through a colander/sieve in to a bowl so it becomes a smooth mixture.

Add the FULL bottle of whiskey and stir… Yeah that’s right, go big or go home. Merry Christmas.

Place the mixture back onto the stove on a low heat and leave it for people to help themselves.
